About

Hi, I am Xi.

I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Computer Science at the BiWell Lab, City University of Hong Kong, supervised by Prof. Yuhan Luo.

Before starting my Ph.D., I received my M.Sc. in Statistics from the National University of Singapore and my B.Sc. from the University of Toronto, with double majors in Mathematics and Statistics and a minor in Computer Science.

My research lies at the intersection of human-AI interaction, health and well-being, and multimodal conversational experiences. Below, I share some of my current research directions.

Current Research Directions

01

How do people interact with AI for emotional support?

As AI becomes increasingly embedded in everyday life, more and more people are turning to it for emotional support and even developing romantic relationships with AI. My research examines how people customize AI for these emotionally meaningful interactions, what behaviors AI exhibits in these interactions, and how people interpret and respond to these behaviors. Across this body of work, I aim to better understand how people experience and make sense of emotionally meaningful interactions with AI, and to translate these insights into the design of systems that better support their emotional needs.

How should chatbots express multimodal empathy in health and well-being contexts?

Empathetic communication becomes increasingly important as conversational AI is integrated into health and well-being contexts, where users may seek not only information but also reassurance, understanding, and emotional support. My research investigates how people perceive and respond to empathy expressed by AI through multimodal cues, how these perceptions vary across contexts, and how multimodal conversational experiences can be designed to communicate empathy more effectively. Across this body of work, I aim to understand how different forms of multimodal expression can be appropriately designed across interaction contexts.
